About the project

Background

Teaching Australia has been working closely with the teaching profession since 2005 on the development of advanced standards for teaching and school leadership. A Charter for the Australian teaching profession, a standards model, a set of Advanced Teaching Capabilities and other work has been completed.

About this project

The project to develop standards for accomplished primary teaching is working with primary teachers and other stakeholders to develop and validate descriptors of accomplished primary teaching. These will elaborate the Charter, and the general Capabilities for advanced teaching already developed by Teaching Australia.

These descriptors are elaborations of observable and demonstrable professional practice. They describe what teachers should know and do to show that they have accomplished the relevant capability.

Working Group

Fifteen primary practitioners - the Working Group - are leading the processes for generating ideas about advanced primary teaching, considering feedback and guiding the project. Some are nominees from professional associations and others have been selected through expression of interest.

Project outcome

This project will capture the essence of accomplished primary teaching as a specialisation in teaching. It will complement other projects on accomplished teaching standards being undertaken by Teaching Australia, and the work of some professional associations that have written professional teaching standards for specific learning areas such as English and literacy, mathematics and science.
