Recognising Excellence: HAToM Candidates from the Catholic Education Office of Melbourne

The Catholic Education Office of Melbourne (CEOM) is supporting around 50 of its teachers to be assessed against the AAMT Standards for Excellence in Teaching Mathematics in Australian Schools over a five year period. The CEOM is supporting the teachers by paying the costs of their assessment, and with time release for networking and preparing for their assessment. Teachers who are successful will become AAMT-accredited Highly Accomplished Teachers of Mathematics, or HAToMs.

The project is a recognition of the work the AAMT has done to develop and implement its Standards over recent years, and we welcome the opportunity to work with the CEOM to recognise the work of some of their best practitioners. There are details about the HAToM credential and assessment process in the Standards section of this website.

The first group of 6 candidates - 5 primary and one secondary teacher from Catholic schools in and around Melbourne - began the process in August 2008 and five of them satisfactorily completed their assessment during term 2 2009. The four who were able to attend the AAMT Bienninal Conference in Perth in July of that year were presented with their HAToM certificates at the conference.

The CEOM is recruiting further teachers for the program around the middle of each year until 2012. If you are in a CEOM school please keep an eye out for information; alternatively contact Gerard Lewis at the CEOM or Will Morony in the AAMT office.
