Early years activities

The activities for the early years students are based around a personal perspective.

Each activity is prompted by simple questions likely to be of interest to younger students.

The Your place in the world activities involve collecting categorical data about family origins and preferred fruit. The data about the families is collected through discussion, and the data about food through the use of simple survey techniques. Students use a variety of methods to display the information collected: picture graphs, lists, tables, maps. They interpret the data to answer the question posed.

The About our world activities emphasise the interpretation of secondary data. Students name and order months and seasons, and relate the seasons to clothing, food and recreation. They identify outcomes of familiar weather events involving chance, and describe them using everyday language. There are many possible links to science.

There are supporting worksheets and maps available for download, links to helpful online resources plus ideas for extension. You can also download the online teaching notes.

Your place in the world: Family origins

Students gather data from home about their family origins, display the data on class maps and picture graphs, and interpret the data to make conclusions about their class.

Your place in the world: Food choices

Students collect and display data about their favourite fruit from a choice of seasonal fruit. They are then given the opportunity to taste the fruit. Students compare ‘before and after’ results.

About our world: Seasons and food

Students discuss and record appropriate clothing, meals and activities associated with the seasons.

About our world: Weather wear

Students look at the language of chance. They choose everyday language and outcomes to describe the chance of a weather event occurring. Students dress a person appropriately for a weather scenario.
