School mathematics for the 21st century (May 2009)

AAMT released the discussion paper School mathematics for the 21st century: What should school mathematics of the 21st century be like? and a companion paper School mathematics for the 21st century: Some key influences in association with National Mathematics Day 2009.

Development of these documents included the seeking of feedback on draft papers during 2008 from individuals and organisations across the spectrum of education in Australia.

These papers are designed to promote discussion about developments in school mathematics now and into the future. Whilst it is expected that they will inform the development of national curriculum in mathematics over the next few years, their purposes are also much more wide reaching

Discussion paper: School mathematics for the 21st century

This discussion paper outlines a broad framework for school mathematics. It is not related to a specific curriculum, but is intended to provoke discussion and reflection among teachers about the nature and emphases necessary in school mathematics teaching and learning for the 21st century.

The paper includes a number of questions and discussion 'starters' that individuals and groups of teachers may wish to consider.

School mathematics for the 21st century: Some key influences

This companion document addresses several areas considered by the AAMT Council to be critical influences on the nature of school mathematics in the 21st century:

  • Mathematics for the 'knowledge economy';
  • Deep knowledge of mathematics;
  • Being numerate;
  • Generation Y and school mathematics; and
  • Changes in mathematics as a discipline and its uses.
