Cassowary fractions

The learning object L119 Cassowary ecology quiz has an ecology quiz which provides information about the endangered cassowary species and poses questions involving fractions in that context.

Display the learning object on an interactive whiteboard (or using a projector).

  • Use the quiz section as a focus for discussion about the various sub-contexts for using fractions, such as height, number of eggs and area.
  • Emphasise the importance of making equal parts whenever representing fractions.

 

The set of activities in the learning object L155 Cassowary fractions uses the context of a sanctuary for cassowaries. It requires holding pens to be constructed by selecting shapes and dividing them into equal parts.

  • Work through one of the holding-pen construction tasks with the class.
  • Focus on strategies for choosing shapes and dividing them into equal parts.

Have pairs of students complete several tasks. The print option in the learning objects provides an opportunity for students to discuss alternative solutions for the same task.
